North British

North British distillery
9 Wheatfield Road
Gorgie, Edinburgh EH11 2PX

Owner: Diageo and Edrington

Creation year: 1885

The Invergordon grain distillery is settled on the Eastern coast of Northern Highlands and has been created in 1959, belonging to Invergordon Distillers Ldt, which would become part of the Whyte & MacKay group some years later.
First spirit was distillen in 1961, in the only Coffey Still installed at the distillery in those days. Two addidtional Coffey stills were added in 1963 and a fourth one, for production of neutral spirit was added in 1978.
The Ben Wyvis distillery was settled on the same ground.

Annual production of the distillery is about 40 million liters.

Girvan

Girvan Distillery
Grangestone Industiral Estate
Girvan Ayrshire KA26 9PT

Owner: William Grant & Sons

Creation year 1963

The Girvan distillery was built in 9 months in 1963, probably as a result of a dispute with Distillers Company Limited (DCL), which decided not to hand over grain whisky to William Grant's family anymore. Since then, Girvan is the distillery that supplies grain whisky for the Grant family's  (Glenfiddich) blends  and it's possible that the grain whisky supply crisis has pushed Glenfiddich to promote its pure malt. Remember that Glenfiddich was the first to popularize malt whiskys at a time when the blend was king.

Garnheath

Garnheath Distillery
Moffat Complex Roughrigg Road
Airdrie North Lanarkshire ML6 8PL

Owner: Inver House Distillers

Creation year: 1964

Garnheath was built in the 1960s, when hybrid distilleries (producing both malt and grain whisky) were considered a profitable model, keeping the distillery safe from potential supply problems to produce their blend. The Moffat paper mill in Airdrie has been transformed into distilleries to ensure the perenniality of the Scotch Inver House Rare blend.
Production began in 1965 and reached its peak around 1980. But soon it was the decline, due to a very high debt. Garnheath finally closed in 1986.

Dumbarton

Dumbarton distillery
2 Glasgow Road
Dumbarton GB2 1ND

Owner: Pernod Ricard

Creation year: 1938

The distillery has been created in 1938 by Hiram Walker, short after he acquired Ballantine in 1936. This grain distillery has been the greatest in Scotland.
Several distilleries shared the site: Dumbarton, Inverleven and Lomond. All of them are closed by now. The Dumbarton distillery was not famous only because it ahs been the biggest in Scotland, but also because its original security system (Scotch Watch) consisting in 5 geese. In 2001, 100 birds were watching on the installations.
Hiram Walker sold the distillery to Allied Distillers which would later become Allied Domecq. When Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq, they also became the owner of Dumbarton. The distillery is closed with no hope to reopen inthe future. Main reason herefor is that the installations are very old and difficult to modify. To compensate the production lost because of this closing, big investments have been made at Strathclyde.
