Speyside Cooperage has been bought by Francois Freres for about £8 million.
For 60 years Speyside has made whisky casks at its sites in Aberlour and Broxburn. Managing director Douglas Taylor said yesterday he and his brother decided to sell the company because there were no family members who wanted to take on the business after their retirement. He added that there was likely to be "significant" investment in the firm by the new owners in the coming months.
Francois Freres is based in state-of-the-art buildings in the sleepy wine village of St Romain, in Burgundy, was founded almost 100 years ago by the grandfather of the current owner, Jean Francois. The Speyside Cooperage was the company's first major foray into Scotch whisky casks.
