The Tamdhu distillery has been created in 1896-97 by a blenders group, but became 2 years later part of the Highland Distillers & Co, who still are the owners nowadays.
The distillery has been closed from 1911 to 1913, then from 1927 till 1948 and its production capacity has been doubled in 1972.
During the time it was closed, the distillery has been used as warehouse for Glenrothes distillery.
In 1975 the number of stills grew to 6. The Tamdhu distillery produces its own malt, using a Saladin box.
The major part of the production is used in the blends Famous Grouse, J&B and Cutty Sark.
The distillery has been mothballed for a few years till it was acquired by Ian MacLeod in June 2011. Production should resume in early 2012.

The colour is deep gold. The nose is full and refined, slightly smoked. The palate recalls cereals with an evolution on the fruits.
The finish reveals malted barley and citrus fruits.

(la Maison du Whisky)

This distillery markets nearly no single malt, but this bottling is a very pleasant surprise. Considering the price-quality rating, it is one of the best surprises I had during the last months. The nose reveals immediately the complexity of the whisky dominated by the malt fragrances, but also some more acid hints. A kind of interesting sweet-sour effect. The taste confirms the first nose impression, and the finish, from average length, is nice too. A very nice bottle for a very nice price.
79/100
The second tasting confirmed especially the slightly acid character of this malt . Even if the acidity is well compensated by the complexity of the fragrances and the taste, it remains a little bit too dominant. For this reason, I changed my quotation. This does not mean this bottle is not really excellent. And the very good quality-price ratio remains....
74/100
The nose is rather dominated by the cereal, with a touch of spices and some citrus fruit hints. In the palate, a complex mix between the acidity of the citrus fruit, the sweetness of the malt and some spicy touches is very pleasant. The finish is clearly on the malt, but is a bit too short.

The nose is rather floral and spicy, although it has a sweet and slightly smoky character. Some remote hints of pear. In the palate, a pleasant sensation of sweetness, without any aggressiveness but with a nice complexity, from ripe pear to unripe walnut with some light touches of smoke on the background. A nice finish, lingering and pleasant, complex too, recalling the sweetness of the palate (marshmallow) and having a fresh character (mint) and with some woody hints.
84/100
A rather flat nose, marked by cereal and some vanilla notes. Nothing spectacular, but not bad neither.
The mouth is relatively neutral. A rather fresh taste of cereals, a very light bitterness after a while. A good whisky for the aperitif, without any pretention, and without any fault. Just a flat whisky.
The finish is quite short, just prolonging the nose and the mouth. Nothing special.

The colour is gold and the nose marked by citrus fruit, spices and cereal. The palate is sweet and slightly grilled. The pleasant final comes back on the malt sweetness.

(la Maison du Whisky)

The nose detects some discrete orange or lemon hints on a malt background. The taste confirms the good impression from the nosing. A good whisky, with the sweetness of the malt  and some slightly acid hints of citrus fruits. Though the finish could be longer, the whole is very pleasant..
79/100
The nose was still very discrete during the second tasting, with some light hints of citrus fruit and malt. The smells seem to be "watered down". In the palate, few complexity. Malt with a touch of acidity. A short and flat finish.
70/100
The nose is pleasantly sweet, slightly honeyish with a touch of spices and vanilla. In the palate, behind the watery feeling, subtle slightly bitter hints mixed with discrete citrus touches. A clear lack at complexity and texture. The finish is quite bitter, and not really interesting.

A very nice nose consisting of a mix of malt and sherry. Nice complexity with some hints of yeast, a touch of woody bitterness and nice fruity fragrances (plum). After a while some additional smells of nuts, a touch of vanilla appear and the sherry notes seem to be more refined. The less pleasant smells (yeast) disappear completely. It seems aeration is very helpful for this whisky.
The first mouth is rather acid and bitter before developing on alcohol tingling and then the palate becomes much smoother and reveals the complexity of this whisky.
The finish is rather fresh and very long, first on pure chocolate notes developing slowly on smoother hints, leaving sherry as only memory after a while.

Quite soft on the nose with a light flowery lemony impact. A definite hint of fruit, not sultanas or fig, more banana or melon. Very clean, quite light, with no woodiness. This would go nicely on Burns Night with haggis and neeps.

Tamdhu: Bladnoch bottling

The nose is clearly complex, first pungent (quite normal with such a percentage of alcohol), but after a while, it reveals nice citrus hints, and all the aggressivity has disappeared. After some minutes, amazing hints of grenadine are completing the whole.
In the palate, this whisky is surprising as well. First on citrus fruits (some kind of bitter orange - for the fresh character of the spirit - , smeared with honey - for the unexpected smoothness). Some discrete woody hints mixed with sweet-sour hints, somewhere between tangerine and malted barley. A very amazing bottle.
The finish is warm and long, with some memories of malted barley and sweet-bitter oranges.
84/100
The nose is pleasantly marked by wax hints, walnut and nice fruity touches. A mix of marshmallow and green apples with a touch of acid drop. Cut grass. A great freshness and a very promising nose.
The mouth is nicely fruity and acid. Nice complexity. Citrus fruits and honey, with as light aftertaste of cashew nuts.
The finish is long and pleasant and remains on the acid register.

The nose is full of nuances, from a slight pine resin smell to mint through all the possible cut grass nuances, those of citrus fruit and finally some hints of beer.
In the palate, a real firework of tastes, beginning by quite a marked citrus acidity developing slowly on nutty than malty notes. Very interesting experience, very rich aroma diversity.
The finish is rather long, marked by both an alcohol impression (which was curiously absent in the mouth) and bitter (unripe walnut) notes before finishing on smooth malty notes.

Quite a spicy nose with pleasant hints of malt and a touch of smoke. Interesting nose, but not transcendent.
The palate is very pleasantly complex, developing gently on sherry notes mixed wit nutty hints. Nice notes of slightly acid red fruit (red currant) are present too.
The finish is lingering and warm, marked by notes of ripe fruit and very nice nutty memories.

Colour: Old gold
The nose is pleasant from the very first. Not overly complex but it plays more on the register of subtlety. It takes a while to give its full potential. Notes fairly close to each other, roasted malt, cocoa and hints of dried fruit. Some spices also.
A first impression in the mouth which contrasts with that announced by the nose. The palate is more complex, and here the sherry takes over, in conjunction with the notes of cocoa which already marked the nose. A slight woody bitterness scraping nothing from the fun but increasing a little in complexity.
Alcohol is perfectly controlled.
The finish is very long, and is shared between sherry and oak that marked the mouth.
An excellent bottle.

A nose of rare finesse. Beautiful notes of gingerbread, the ripe fruit and gentian ... in short, a wonderful blend of sweet spices, fruity sweetness and bitterness. Notes of green fruit are added, giving a new dimension to the nose: a nice note. acid
The nose is constantly changing.
The mouth is the perfect extension of the nose. Here too the taste buds travel in a complex world, the four cardinal points of taste ... sweetness, bitterness and acidity ... The whole is beautifully balanced, complex but still a great classic. No false note.
The finish is pleasantly warm and relatively long. Here too, we find in turn the bitter notes and the sweetness of ripe fruit. Spices are less present than in the nose.
A remarkable bottle.

The nose is exceptionally rich and pleasant. Clear fruity notes and some pepper on the background. A real explosion of both sweet and acid notes, and no woody fragrances despite the number of years spent in the cask. Gingerbread.
The first contact in the palate is dry, and the taste developes quickly to the fragrances announced by the nose, and now some very fine wood notes appear.
The finish is rather bitter and relatively short. The memory of a kind of bitterness stays for a while.

Couleur: Or

Nose: Orange, smoke.
Taste: Citrus, alcohol is well here.
Final: Medium
Alcohol too present

WDTS2011-02 Mars

Nose: Wonderful fruit acidity, which unfortunately fades after aeration: Green apple, lime, mango, passion fruit.
We have also marshmalow, licorice and wood.
After breathing and addition of water appear aromas of nuts, wax and milk chocolate.
The flavors are well blended.

Taste: Very sweet and oily. Wonderful balance with a nice fruity. Slightly too aggressive.

Final: Sweet, fruity, floral (I thought for a moment to be at a florist). Aromas of precious wood, licorice, chocolate milk, a little pepper. Sweet and very long finish. Avoid adding water.

Appearance: yellow gold, thin legs that flow fairly quick
Nose: moderate to heavy intensity, alcohol present but not disturbing, toffee candy and candied fruit, fresh bread, sugary sweetness, fresh mint, very light peat (or green tea?)
Taste: moderate to heavy intensity, woody dryness (very present but not overwhelming) in attack, medium to strong pepper added shortly after, bread and sweets come again in the end
Finish: medium to long
With water: less intense, less pepper, less woody dryness, the whisky loses personality but wins in roundness
Conclusion: A very different malt in the mouth and nose, drinkble with and without water, I like both

WDTS2011-02 Alexandre

The nose is very delicate and excellently cast. After a strong initial contact, alcohol, all in a warm vegetable and citrus mood (grapefruit, lemon), the nose opens with gentle floral and cereal notes, which coat a fine mix of vegetal flavors, accompanied by citrus, light peat and iodine. It is complex to perfection, very well balanced and powerful as it should. Cereal flavors give way after aeration to more gourmet scents like almond paste or coffee, and all soften. A very nice nose.

The palate is high on tar, smoke and peat. A bit biting, it proves to be less refined than the nose. Very cool, near monolithic, that mouth then turns into toffee, until a tip of chili come to increase this sensation of biting. Aeration allows grain to appear at the beginning of mouth, and a hint of chocolate also enters, especially after adding water.

The finish is excellent. Long, it is heavily loaded with salt and chili. Nearly burning hot, it allows the flavors of sugar to make their appearance in the middle of this power after aeration. The water softens it again with praline. It is pungent and powerful, like it or leave it.

In conclusion, a more powerful and biting whiskey than the nose leads to think. Tough, it may not please everyone. Personally, I do not have much to complain of, except maybe the rough side of the mouth.

89/100
WDTS2011-02 Pompix

The nose reveals a very greedy and powerful malt. We have here a wonderful blend rum / raisin / caramel featuring lots of spices. This nose strongly suggests custard (vanilla/caramelized sugar) and butterscotch.
On the palate, the attack is powerful and turns immediately to caramel and custard aroma.
The finish is long and powerful.

Very greedy whisky, powerful but never aggressive.

N: Apple cream, butter, lining the mouth well and good amplitude balance, over time it gains in finesse and balance like.

Apart from a slight tingling quite pervasive, especially at first, the nose is very pleasant. Lots of fruity notes, ranging from plum to the pear, thus covering a wide range of odors. The nose is delightfully complex, especially when after a few minutes some discrete woody notes are added.
If the rest of the tasting is worthy, we definitely deal with a great whisky.
On the palate, the fruitiness is slightly more discreet and it is first caught by a relatively aggressive acidic side. Once these initial impressions over, we go back quite quickly over very pleasant sensations. A nice feeling of warmth and hints of plum jam always with the nutty flavor in the background. First, surprisingly, that mouth is moving towards some interesting notes combining acidity with hints of strong coffee. Very surprising
The finish is long and in perfect agreement with the mouth. The notes of coffee mixed with quite marked acidity that persist for many minutes.

Nose: Rather complex. First nose rather winey. Then comes an avalanche of spices, notes of nuts, almonds, too.
I felt some iodine, salted butter caramel style. Also a some coffee. This is followed by notes of tropical fruit notes and then slight menthol or camphor ...

Palate: Warm, creamy, thick, there's matter, consistency! An attack "sweet and sour" sauce, Asian style pork caramel. Balsamic vinegar.
Followed by a iodine and fruity mix with a gaggle of spices ... hard to describe, but it's good!

Finish: Quite long, hot, but slight woody and somewhat dry ...

88/100
WDTS2011-02 Blackmalt

Gold color

The nose is not too expressive at first. It is strongly marked by alcohol later, the presence of alcohol is clearly identifiable. It then evolves on the fresh shredded coconut. Or even the shredded coconut in a bag for making cakes. For cons, the burning sensation caused by alcohol is still regrettable. The second nose is still spicy with notes with rather strong new plastic and subtle hints of coffee. With added water and afer some areraton, it becomes more focused on the black pepper, liquid coffee becomes ice and hints of yellow fruits. And oddly (or not?) it seems to me slightly peated from one moment to another. And ho! All of a sudden I'm back and a slap in childhood with a very pronounced odor Karaneige candy!

Mouth is very spicy (black pepper like at nosing) and rather woody. Astringent and rather sweet. With water added , it becomes more rough.

Quite long finish and a return on the palate spicy side (always the same pepper).

Fairly mized impressions. The nose started well with its clear coconut hints, then alcohol burn came a little dull the first impression. But things get better afterwards.
Too bad I the mouth and final were not at hte level of the nose. But I still put a good rating because everything seems to me consistent and I really enjoyed the nose (especially the sweet note at the end!)

88/100
WDTS2011-02 Canis Lupus

Colour: Old gold.
Nose: 1st nose has trouble starting, oiled, then wakes up after few seconds, Sweet and Sour notes, almost fish sauce. Then abruptly switch of the nose to praline notes, maraschino, amaretto. Roasted coffee beans. Boiled coffee. Mixes with almost meaty notes, evokes a bit Viandox .. Liqueur, apricot kernels. On a subtle and succeeded way, all is full-bodied with tiny touches of leather tanned and vulcanized rubber.
After a moment, all blends to evoke a mixture of alcohol fruit (raspberry, cherry, cassis) of constant power.
The addition of water favorably aligns the nose, a nice melted praline dessert and coffee.
Palate: Rich and oily, boots on the coffee without sugar, then evolves into a bit more sour notes, bitter enough to give a nearly venerable classy feel.. Alcohol present but well integrated, no aggression.
Water energizes the mouth is a definite plus. The mouth is the perfect extension of the nose and more expressive, more crisp, tiny alcohol burn.
Finale: In the wake of the mouth.
Water generously develops the final, following on the palate with a nice presence of smoke

Comment: Relatively rich and complex, it lacks that certain something to really stand out. A slight lack of harmony, balance. A little wild and ancient in its own way.
The water enhances it undoubtly and erases its slight defects while revealing it's quqlities. The effect on the final is almost spectacular in the amount of smoke revealed

Color: golden amber. Thin and regular legs.
Nose: Captivating, very smooth. Currant, Demerara sugar, butter. Elegant sherry . Very "rummy" nose. After an hour of aeration appearance of a bizarre note (funny) but not disturbing: green celery .
Taste: Very smooth, syrupy. Alcohol well integrated.
Final: Aromatic and long. Mocha brown Candico. Creamy come back. Persistence of ripe banana.

Closed nose, marked by alcohol, sherry expressed by notes of wood and chocolate.

Well balanced and interesting whisky .

WDTS2011-02 Dede

Color: Gold

Nose: The first nose is alcoholic and not very expressive. Leaving it some time, it opens a little, but nothing too fun. Caramel, vegetal notes (grass cut for a few days), a bit of citrus acidity, but the whole remains a boardy despite fresh mint touches in the background. The alcohol vapors are still very present. A little water will do him good. It is then more sweet with powdered sugar, and especially less boardy. The liveliness brought by the tangy notes also more apparent. Few days of aeration made him much good. The profile is substantially the same, but the defects have faded in favor of quality. Is its freshness and vitality that now dominate, with a beautiful combination of mint and lemon. Vinous notes after adding water.

Palate: The attack is powerful. There is a lot of alcohol, enough to claim a drop of water anyway. One manages to overcome it by turning it into his mouth. We're on a vaguely tastes bittersweet aroma mixed with chemical apple flavour and a sour touch. Water erases actually burning alcohol, but does unfortunately not much on the aromatic plane. As the nose is much better after a few days, fresh and tangy (lemon drops, lemon verbena), especially with a drop of water,

Finish: Medium length, it is sour, the lemon drop.

Conclusion: A malt that lacks definition. The aromas are perceived a little rough, especially in the mouth. The addition of water significantly improves nose.

Nose: Starts on caramel and cough syrup for children.
Once caramelized wave passed, it has nuts, spices, pepper and some vinous notes.
With aeration, it becomes more floral and vegetal.
Taste: Caramel is not present in the mouth, phew thank you.
It is warm with hints of chocolate, candied orange and coffee.
Lingering finish of pepper and chocolate.
Too bad the nose is too marked by sherry.

Color : dark gold

Nose : We start with vegetables soup (especially carrot). Behind that, a small touch of honey and wax. Smells like crystallized fruits (quince) and fresh almond. After a few minutes, we begin to get whiffs of sour cream or lassi (that indian yoghurt). Pretty herbaceous. We finish with roasted chestnuts and crushed banana with sugar.

Mouth : We stay on the herbaceous side at first, carrot soup and a little honey. The alcohol is here, warming. A little smoke to be found here on the background. Smells like roasted almonds. Some kind of oaky bitterness.

Finale : Long, warm and bitter.

Conclusion : A pretty interesting whisky, but not to my taste. The alcohol helps giving some body to this dram.

Color: old gold.
The nose is not very expressive, rather closed. Lack of exuberance. You feel the power. Notes of sherry, light sherry. Caramel. It seems quite young. Water brings out a fruity, floral.
Powerful palate. Strong woody spices. The taste is astringent (amplified by the addition of water).
Long, pretty intense finish. Wood, a little fruit, a little spice.
I do not really appreciate the profile. It looks like a young whisky passed through a hyperactive cask!

81/100
WDTS2011-02 Jean-Michel

Colour: Pale amber.

Nose: Strange. Toffee, but also something citric and sour. Orange flavoured fudge? Raspberry vinegar? pomegranate? All kinds of odd tasting chemical sweets. Baked apples. Apple pie and its vanilla/cinnamon ice cream. marzipan. Something farmy too. Taned leather. Complicated, and surely uncommon, but in a way that doesn't completely succeeds in hiding rooty notes that reveals a certain youthfulness. And even if the alcohol is quite well integrated for a malt that prrobably reaches 60%, you'd better like it hot!

Mouth: Quite hot. Water please! More marmelade, now. And still some leather. Orange fudge. Milk jam. Almond jam. A coffee with a cloud of milk. Corossol ice cream. Creamy, but really hot.

Finish: Long and tough, sustained by the heat of the alcohol, the return of the apples and cinnamon, and a hint of sour milk.

Comment: A tough malt drawn from a cask that gave a lot, and gave it fast. A bit too violent for my taste.

79/100
WDTS2011-02 Gaxmalt31

Nose: Walnuts, grain whisky, like solvent, mulled wine on the vinous or port, caramel (added?) Bacon crisps. Alcohol is very present, probably a young whisky. A few drops of water it becomes rounder, more enjoyable.
Taste: A cask strenght undoubtedly strong presence of sherry, dried fruit (grapes), coffee bean, slightly peppery. Even with water the alcohol is very (too) present. An elusive whisky, too strong for my taste. Only sherry aspects dominate, masking other flavors.

79/100
WDTS2011-02 Piazzolla

NOSE: mineral and slightly fruity. At one time too watery, too alcoholic to another, in short very versatile. Slight hint of rum.
Palate: Very sweet on entry, more vegetal evolution. A bit of yeast and malt. At the discretion of ventilation, Marzipan appears. A little alcoholic.
FINAL: medium, mainly on vegetal bitterness .
Neither good nor bad. Neither complex nor simple. Really hard to know what to think, but for my part, I think this is not for me.

The nose is outstanding with fade and change. Beginning with the piquant flavors of citrus fruit on play-dough with a distant influence of sherry (oilseeds), it quickly becomes softer, with the assertive sherry (chocolate). This is not a sherry gourmet: it is balanced by earthy notes and spices (lemon, pepper). Aeration allows the nose to become frankly pastry (coffee, pastry cream, sugar), with also the appearance of some farm notes.

The palate confirms the promise of the nose. Dominated by sherry, it started on chocolate before turning into pastry aromas. Powerful, syrup and alcohol are properly integrated, it develops later on all that sherry can offer: nuts, berries, coffee liqueur, all getting better thanks to the ventilation . All is well controlled, it is a very good job.

The long final, begins with notes of tobacco leaves, before proposing a lovely complexity with flavors of sherry, but also something fresher and invigorating reminiscence of an after eight. Aeration highlights some very nice notes of dark chocolate and pastry.

In conclusion, a good whisky with aromas perfectly integrated and controlled with a sherry profile distinguished by its freshness and vigor.

Color: Brown, Mahogany
A very pleasant nose strongly marked by sherry. Notes of chocolate that share the spotlight with some scents of cigar box. Thus slightly woody notes. All in a nice complexity and perfect balance. After a few moments, hay notes also appear.
The first impression in the mouth is bitterness and somewhat unexpected freshness intertwined. Apart from the element of surprise (because the nose did not anticipate such a profile), the mouth is very pleasant, complex and balanced. The contrast between the chocolate notes, the slightly woody and fresh notes of plum and sour unripe is very interesting. But beyond the first sip, it is the traditional sherry notes that clearly dominate.
Nice finish long and warm, perfectly summarizing the impressions of the mouth and nose.
An excellent sherry ..

In the nose, the first impression is on the wet rock and the firecracker! A little marshmallow, raisins soaked with rum, with malted and caramelized notes mixed with a little ash. A little bit explosive elements which expect a powerful whisky, at least in alcohol. In halftone, maybe a little bit floral, and a bottom pastry cook, between the toffy, the almond paste and the candied fruits. In the aeration, the toffy stands out, with a little licorice. A lot of character in any case.
The attack in mouth is exactly explosive, even sparkling. In some words, bitter malt, the ash, then fruity acidulated notes (apple) and wooded (oak), to continue on the dry sherry, and on the oak (vanilla). Some spices in addition come to perfect the whole. A mouth quite in transition, melted, magnificent.
Finale is greedy, on the a little bit coniferous oak, the roasted cereal and the walnut (return of the sherry).
Really a dram very beautiful. The mouth is brilliant, and finale too.

Color: Copper
Nose: Powerful, marked by sherry olrosso. Lots of cocoa, dates, raisin cake with hints of ginger and sweet spices that are more discreet with aeration. Also note the presence of a slight match presence.
Palate: Round, beautiful aromatic richness. Plum, dried fruit and sweetness to match the bitterness of the cocoa. Some pepper and mint.
Finish: Quite long on cocoa without any aggressiveness.
Overall impression: Well balanced, with a slight preference for the mouth. A very good sherry cask, certainly from Speyside, for fans of this type of very distinctive whisky and I am part of them....

WDTS2011-04 Canis Lupus

Colour: Old gold , clear teak.
Nose: nose first on coffee and much of the anise. Wood, dry wood, old furniture, but without polish. Creamy. Nuts (cashews, pecans). Rubber appears gradually. Hints of spearmint. A slight bitterness and astringency. Slightly caramelized. Toast, crust of stale bread. Coffee and anise continue to alternate.
Water highlights the notes of coffee at the expense of the rest. Coffee left on the stove, dessert coffee. Some notes salty, coppery, almost animal. Anise has become very light.
Taste: relatively bright, creamy, spicy, with notes and similar to the nose, but melted, less discernible.
With water, the attack is a little less bright, but the mouth remains broadly the same notes.
Final: A big hole early in the final, and smoke, only smoke. Smoke perfumed aromas previously collected. Slightly astringent.
Water has filled that hole a little at the beginning of the end. The final gain much power, with notes closest to the nose than the mouth. However astringency This also reinforced and accompanied by bitterness.

Comment: Very well done, a nice sherry. Nice aniseed notes that suggest a Glenlivet. It lacks that je ne sais quoi to enter the area of great whiskys, but it's very pleasant. Water or not, depending on whether one prefers to choose the nose or the mouth and final

WDTS2011-04 Savoureur

Appearance: light amber
nose: Medium intensity, well-integrated alcohol, almond paste, vanilla freshness, cooked fruits, hazelnut, a bit of burnt rubber
Taste: Average intensity, the same aromas as on the nose but the bitter burnt rubber dominates too much for my taste
finish: average
With water: Loses some intensity on the nose, the mouth has less bitter burned rubber, I prefer the whisky with a few drops of water
conclusion: A pleasant whisky on the nose and on the palate provided you add a few drops of water

I apologise for so short notes…

Dry sherry, strong caramel and spices, burnt wood.
In mouth, powerfull taste with nuts on finish.
This strong sherry cask reminds me recent Glendronach.

Amber color.
The nose is initially a dusty feeling, then comes the dark chocolate and caramelized apples typical refinery in sherry casks.
The mouth is round and balanced. Chocolate wins. Alcohol is the second part and brings freshness.
The finish is marked by very powerful chocolate. The impression of dust returns as if the language was a little sprinkled Van Houten. Whisky is lighter and a little savory.

WDTS2011-04 Dadamien

Nose: Very fruity, tropical, banana and pineapple (1st tasting). Hint of young sherry I don't appreciate that much, these notes becoming stronger at second tasting. Hint of sulphur. With time, coffee, orange, chocolate.
Mouth: Start sulphury, young sherry, slightly fruity (with tropical fruits at 1st tasting), bitter orange, coffee. We find these notes in the final and a touch of alchoool. Slightly long on the coffee.

Amber color, orange highlights.
Nose: greedy, quite powerful on the sherry. Beautiful woody, some dried fruit. Light orange notes. The nose is not very expressive.
Mouth rather powerful. Wood dominates, slight bitterness. Dried fruit.
Moderately long finish, marked by intense enough wood. Slightly bitter.
A fairly classic sherry.

Color : Bronze

Nose : We start with notes of fig, cinnamon, date, plum, lassi (indian yogurt) and sour milk. Some salt. Very sweet and complex. Balsamic vinegar. Vine peach (liquor), very ripe summer fruits, almost rotting. Nice floral whiffs (tropical flowers). It's very vinous, a nice sherry. Slightly woody and peppery (white pepper). It's ample, warming and elegant. In the end, some menthy coolness.

Mouth : We find plum, date and some wood. Mouth is ample and rich, bitter but fresh (mint). It feels like eating dry apricots. Too ripe guava, blacks fruits (blackberry).

Finale : long, suave, sugary with a slight bitterness.

Conclusion : A two-faced dram. A very complex nose, a mouth at first a bit monolithic, a little behind, even if it's nice. Some drops of water open it a little. After a few minutes, it's smooth, rich and generous. A tad too woody.

Color: Amber
Very sherry nose, grapes, or even a milk chocolate with raisins, overripe red fruits, strawberry in particular, is greedy. And clearly this chocolate remains in place.
Alcohol is fairly well controlled. I say "fairly" because after a while it became much more marked by alcohol. It's a shame.
Mouth slightly dry and mineral. It is more powerful than the nose. It may be a little dusty. More deeply, the taste of just crushed fresh hazelnuts.
Finish: still sherry, nice continuity. It is very long. But rather funny because it breaks at once to return later with a delicious red fruit coulis. I like it.

Comment: Very good whisky. My notes are short, but that does not mean that I did not like. So I stick to the basics for this one:) Ha, if a disappointment to feel alcohol's nose really bothered me. Which justifies the reduction of the note.

Color: Amber

Nose: Aggressive, balsamic vinegar, gunpowder, match freshly scraped and black mushrooms. We are in the territory of sherry. It is a little more gradually winey and sweet with hints of raisin cooked wine. After aeration, notes of nuts and mocha. Strangely, it seemed very different at the second tasting, with notes typical of dry sherry, fino or amontillado types with this blend of nuts (almonds, walnuts) and acidity. Very special, it almost seemed repulsive to me first nose than I got used to it... Not an easy, nose but once we hooked, it before turns out very good.

Palate: Powerful, the burn of alcohol is noticeable, though manageable. In line with the nose, with hints organic acids and sulfur, rubber and raisins. Typical of some kind of sherry, not gourmet but dry. The mouth has changed little against the two tastings.

Finish: Quite long, though it continues what began in the mouth before ending the bitterness of the walnuts, unfortunately marred by an unpleasant smell of rubber.

Conclusion: A straight whisky , but well done and interesting. A kind of archetype. The water does not change significantly, but makes it easier to drink. He swims well.

Colour: Medium mahogany, long legs in the glass.
Nose: Fine dried fruits, dates, figs, beautiful and round, easy sherry here, not too dominating. Later honey and burnt caramel. (Field blossoms in springtime) Sweet but not without a fine complexity.
Taste: Surprisingly strong and very dry, even smoky. Much less sherry and few fruits but bitter herbs. (Garden works in springtime, burning leaves and twigs.) Fine wooden oaky notes and a pleasant mustiness leading toward the very pleasant and dry ...
Finish: Again dry and pleasant and very very long and mingling between sweet dry fruits and fine oak.
Guesswork: This dram is very hard to guess. I could have placed a big bet on a simple sherry cask after the nose, but the palate maked me very unsure here. Perhaps a port or other sweet wine (marsala) finish. Alcohol is also hard to guess: Seems to be more than 43% but the palate is so fine and round, the finish so pleasant, I cannot add water here... Macallan? Aberlour? Something like this. Very lekker anyway. I’m very curious to learn what it is, always being in search for a sherry dram I really can love ....

Color: Bronze
Nose: Sweet attack (rum, grappa), followed by sublime notes of fresh vanilla. Alcohol well integrated.
Palate: On the same sweet notes of rum. Alcohol is a little bit more present but very well integrated.
Final average white grapes notes.
Good balance from the nose to the final.

Nose: anything that seems watery nose! Rather apart from a timid note of peach syrup and coffee filter. Winey (Pineau / Porto). Armagnac. Mint.
Mouth: oily mixture of Armagnac, port and Pineau ... weird! Rum (molasses) even more ... Very disturbing.
Finale: a maelstrom of notes surprising, as mentioned in the mouth. Not necessarily very long.

Not a big fan in a first time. A "love it or hate it". Will not leave indifferent. For my part I have not caught even if the jam has a certain originality. I will not be surprised to find a finish.

WDTS2011-04 Jean-Michel

Colour: Fallen leaf. Infused tea.
Nose: Young and powerful sherry. Something sweet and sour, not unlike south-east Asian cooking (pork with pineapples for instance). After a little while, gets quite “A’Bunadh-ish”, unfolding on dry fruits (almond peels, hazelnuts). Not unpleasant at all, but seems rather simple whisky to me, with a bit too much caramel to my liking.
Mouth: Really hot now (55%?), but quite sweetish at the same time, almost cloying. Same sweet and sour feeling than on the nose, with more spices coming from the cask. Some cinnamon, and a hint of clove. Also a little cocoa. No bitterness, but quite some tannin.
Finish: Medium length, with brown sugar and milk chocolate.
Comment: A high strength malt, probably from a large batch rather than a single cask. Not bad whisky, but the dialog with the sherry is a tad boring.

79/100
WDTS2011-04 Alouis

Colour: Amber
Nose: Caramel and the omnipresence of cough syrup for children.
A little nut behind the veil of caramel cheap.
The water reduces slightly caramel but does nothing else ....
Palate: The palate same, this time over cooked caramel and bitterness.
If we seek we will find a little nuts, but you have to be persistent.
Water does not mitigate the caramel and strengthens the astringency.
Long and astringent.
How to select a cask like this or they were forced on the E150 too:)

Speyside

Speyside Map

The Speyside area is situated at the North of the Cairngorm mountain and goes to the Moray firth. It is delimited by two rivers: the Findhorn at the West side and the Deveron on the East side.
The area is named after the river Spey. Most of the distilleries take their water in one of its affluents; the Fiddich, the Livet or the Avon.
About sixty distilleries from Speyside are described on this site.
