SPIRIT OF THE FRINGE 2007 - BRUICHLADDICH 18
TonyThe Spirit of the Fringe Award was launched at Whisky Fringe 2007, where all visitors were given the chance to vote for their favourite spirit tasted that weekend. The recently released Bruichladdich 18 Year Old is the inaugral winner and its name will be engraved in our the Spirit of the Fringe silver trophy coaster. The bottle will sit proudly in our Edinburgh shop display cabinet until next year, when it will be replaced by another winning spirit.
We chose one lucky person at random from those that correctly voted for Bruichladdich 18 as the winner of a £100 voucher for Royal Mile Whiskies. That winner was Iain Sutherland of Glasgow (see, us Edinbuggers don't have anything against those Weegies!)
Results
57% of Fringers voted (better than the Scottish elections!) and the results were very tight, with just 13 votes seperating the top ten:
1. Bruichladdich 18
2. Talisker 18 Year Old
3. Glenfarclas 30 Year Old
4. Glenrothes Select Reserve
5. Speyside's Finest 1965 Old Malt Cask
6. Laphroaig Quarter Cask
7. Port Ellen 1983 Old Malt Cask
8. Tomintoul 27 Year Old
9. Ardbeg Airigh Na Beist
10. Arran Tokaji Finish
It was also interesting to note that an amazing 111 different spirits received votes. Given that there were about 150 spirits on tasting, this goes to show how the taste of the individual is everything, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Trust your own palate!
