The Strathmill distillery has been founded during the whisky-boom at the end of the 19th century under the name Glenisla-Glenlivet Distillery.
It has been taken over in 1894 by the W&A Gilbey company (who were also owners of Glen Spey and Knockando).
This distillery, result of the alteration of an old mill, doubled its production capacity in 1969.
The production is not marketed as single malt, and therefore the only available bottlings are those of independent bottlers.

The colour is old gold, with slight amber glints. The nose reveals cooked fruit (apple and pear), spices (cinnamon) and grilled malted barley.
The palate is full, and feels the maturation in sherry casks, with roasted and fruity hints.
The finish develops on grilled walnut and apricot.
The whole is very nice and refined.

(la Maison du Whisky)

A distillery which is not well known out of the blender world. This Signatory edition lets single malt lovers discover a very nice whisky.

The second tasting revealed a rich nose, with complex fragrances bases on malt with slightly acid hints and sweet spices. The taste in the palate is first complex, pleasant and develops rapidly on malt. A too short finish achieves the whole.
17/20
The rather fresh nose reveals malt with some slightly acid (citrus fruit) hints, on a fruity background. In the palate, the taste develops on ripe fruit notes (pear) with some smoke and citrus touches on the background where malt remains present as well. A very nice woody finish, quite long.
18/20
The nose is marked by yeast with some light hints of peat and smoke. Traces of citrus fruit as well.
In the palate, a pleasant sensation where a bit of peat meets some hints of citrus fruit and some touches of malted barley. Nothing very special indeed.
The finish is rather short and keeps the memory of malt.

The first nose is quite discrete. Malty notes followed by discrete fruit hints (green apple) an then very discrete touches of cut grass, menthol and marshmallow.
The mouth is first (fortunately very short) austere and then develops on interesting fruity notes and woody hints mix to the whole.
The finish is lingering, and primarily marked b the memory of wood. Not this refined wood which makes old whiskies so beautiful, but this kind of quite dry bitterness, which leaves a rather ascetic feeling behind.

Speyside

Speyside Map

The Speyside area is situated at the North of the Cairngorm mountain and goes to the Moray firth. It is delimited by two rivers: the Findhorn at the West side and the Deveron on the East side.
The area is named after the river Spey. Most of the distilleries take their water in one of its affluents; the Fiddich, the Livet or the Avon.
About sixty distilleries from Speyside are described on this site.
