Ulf is a great whisky lover since ages, as he discovered single malt in the ealy 1970's. For more than 30 years,
he has been very active in the whisky world (through the organisation of lectures and tastings). He was invited
to join the illustrious club
"Keepers
of the Quaich" in 1995 and he is also a member of the Malt
Maniacs.
An extremely carefully laid out book telling the story of this mythic whisky collection, created in 1995 by Mike Collings. Even if this collection is discontinued by Diageo now, it represents a liquid memory of the most representative malts produced by the distilleries of the group since the early 1970's.
A history of the collection and of Diageo is briefly but clearly evoked in this book which seems to become a reference book for all whisky lovers in the coming years.
Near this general information about the Rare Malts collection as such, some tasting tips, a clear explanation of the making and maturation process of whisky, the book contains amazing information about the distilleries and clear tasting notes for a great deal of the bottles selected within this collection.
The book was published by Quiller Press and is sold fo 30 £
Amazing book, this distilleries guide written by Robin Brilleman. The book describes 96 Scotch distilleries in detail.
A detailed description of each distillery with the origin of the name, the history of the distillery, production
figures, origin of the water and use of the single malt produced (used in blends, percentage of marketed singel
malt, etc...)
The book is called "The guide - Scotch Malt Whisky" and is published in a very handy format, which makes it the ideal companion for visiting distilleries. You can take it everywhere with you in you pocket...
Robin lives in Amsterdam and writes since about ten years on whisky and Scotland. His book has been published
earlier in a more conventional format, and this first edition has inspired many comments on distilleries on www.whisky-distilleries.info.
But writing is not the only activity of Robin in the world of whisky, as he also organises whisky classes. For
more information, see his own website:
www.robinbrilleman.nl.
The book is available from his website and in the best whisky shops in Netherlands. Unfortunately, it is only available
in Dutch...which of course is no problem for people understanding this language...
The
new edition of "Malt whisky yearbook" is from now on available. Questions are "What are the differences
with the previous version", "why should I buy this new release, as I have the old one", etc...
Having seen both editions, I would answer "yes" to the question "Should I buy the new edition". Even if the hundred Scottish (and other) distileries remain the same from one year to the other one, the autors of this book were succesful in giving me the same pleasure as last year.
Feature articles giving some answers to common questions like "The first hours in teh life of a whisky" (or what is the role of distillation in the quality of the end product) by Ian Wisniewski, the "new" markets, like India or Russia, a list of new distillery bottlings are just some of the reasons to buy that new edition. I sincerely guess that those who liked the 2006 edition (and who did not enjoy it?) will be pleased to get and read the new one...
And for those who did not get the 2006 edition, this new edition will certainly please them.

Whisky is an alcoholic drink. Let's prefer quality to quantity as the abuse of alcohol beverages can damage the health. Consuming alcoholic drinks during pregnancy, even in small quantities, can seriously affect the health of the child. Consumption of alcohol impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.
