Bladnoch

Just a wee update to say hello to everyone on my favourite site. Despite many resolutions, I still haven't managed to learn to speak anything other than "holiday French". The small town near Bladnoch distillery, Wigtown, is a Booktown and has close relations with Becherel in Brittany which...

Hi Serge and laphroaig c moi. Your comments are interesting. In my opinion, a heavily sherried or a peated Bladnoch is not really Bladnoch. We've distilled some peated malt and I'm sure we'll have no difficulty selling it but it's not the message of Bladnoch. I was going over some casks of 14 yo the...

Hi Jean-Marie PROBLEMS Re "You explain to us regularly the difficulties you have" Perhaps I should also try to convey not just the problems of my work but also the immense pleasure it gives. I consider myself to be more of an optimist than a realist, certainly not a pessimist. Marketing is...

When the price of something rises, so too does our willingness to shop around. I mentioned above that since the beginning of this year it was becoming more difficult to source barrels and prices were rising and so I was forced to look at getting casks directly from America. This was not as difficult...

Casks

I've mentioned before that with the increase in new filling, the price of casks is increasing. Availability of casks is declining because those distillers holding large stocks of casks are a little bit cautious about releasing them at this point until they are certain that prices are not likely to i...

Cleaning

In a small distillery, distilling is probably the easiest job to do. Unfortunately it's not possible to bring the spirit into the still and then sit back and watch, whilst the steam boils off the spirit over the next 5 or 6 hours. There are lots of other things to do. We normally try to mash and dis...

Day to Day problems in running a small distillery.

One of the difficulties of being a small business is that you lack buying power and consequently have to pay more for everything. It soon becomes obvious why ultimately distilleries become more profitable if they amalgamate. Last year at Bladnoch we paid £215 per tonne for our malt, this year they s...

Does anyone know if there is an easy method of converting an English language computer to make it write using French letters, for example "e" ecute or "e" grave avec un accent ou un circonflexe?

The Port Ellen offer has now ended. My thanks to everyone for your excellent support. Only about 40 bottles have not been sold and I want to sell these in the distillery shop. The collective action by all the forum members has made it possible for me to purchase and sell speedily a large and expensi...

I feel I must apologise publicly to Jean-Marie who I asked to help and whose response was immediate. He has been generous in his unpaid assistance and willingness. And I hope we have the opportunity to co-operate further. It would be my preference if possible if in future the details could be collec...
