Independent bottlers

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is an institution in Scotland who buys its whiskies directly at the distilleries. The whisky is bottled under the name of the Society. An agreement between the Society and the distilleries states that the name of the distillery is not written on the label. Just a number, known by the members is printed on the label (for instance, nr 4 is Highland Park)
Some distilleries prefer indeed that their name is not mentioned on bottles of independent bottlers, because they consider that this could interfere in their communication policy. This kind of agreements is made with most of the scottish distilleries.
The casks are carefully selected, and the whisky is not filtered nor reduced, and all the bottlings are single cask and cask strength bottlings.
In the bottling philosophy of the SMWS, the land and the cask are essential. The SMWS is also involved in the ecologic aspects of the production, and refuses any king of colorings and all usage of GMO's in the manufacturing and bottling chains.
The whisky is only available to the members of the SMWS.
See the links page for eventually contacting the "Society".
